A toothache is pain that occurs around the teeth and jaws. It is usually caused by a dental problem. Most toothaches are the result of tooth problems such as a cavity, cracked tooth, exposed root, or gum disease. Jaw joint disorders can also produce pain that is mistaken for a toothache. A toothache may be mild or sharp, and even excruciating. Chewing, cold or warmth can aggravate the pain. An oral exam, including dental X-rays, will help to determine whether the pain is due to a jaw or tooth problem.
